Hope is stronger close to home

Insights from the Australian Community Survey

Here’s a fascinating insight: the closer to home we get, the more hopeful Australians feel. In 2025, only 19% felt hopeful about the future of the world. But that rose to 29% when considering the future of Australia, 32% for their local community, and 44% for their personal future.

Why does hope increase as we zoom in?

Because local and personal spheres offer more control, more connection, and more visibility. You can see the impact of your actions. You know your neighbours. You can make a difference.

This insight is powerful. It tells us that maybe that’s where we need to start. By investing in our communities, supporting one another, and nurturing personal wellbeing, we build the foundations for broader hope.

So if the world feels overwhelming, zoom in.
